Evisu Cube Gallery - China Chapter Exhibition

In November 2007 the Evisu Cube Gallery went to . To celebrate the spirit of artistic talent in , 48 local artists in different art forms (including graphic designers, illustrators, fashion designers, sculptors, singers, architects, photographers etc.) were invited to participate in the Evisu Cube Gallery - Chapter. Recruited in August 2007, each collaborator was given a pack containing Evisu denim and fabric, as well as extra “parts” such as buttons, rivets, labels and tags. They used the items to create a one-off “art piece” to fit a cube display box. There were no rules and the only limit is imagination — except that (1) use at least one Evisu “part,” and (2) must fit in the cube (cube sized 34cm x 34cm x 34cm). The 48 original creations collectively made up a special touring group exhibition.

The Evisu Cube Gallery project was inspired by the Japanese “Cube Gallery.” In post-modern Tokyo and , the thrives in arcades and alleyways lit by the glow of Pachinko machines and late-night clubs. Evisu Cube Gallery - China Chapter

cube gallery art
On March 30th 2006 Evisu organized an art exhibition in the Evisu Paris store based on the Japanese concept of “cubicle gallery”. Art was created in tiny boxes acting as miniature art spaces. We approached about thirty young artists, stylists and other creators, supplied them with Evisu denim and asked them to make a doll for the Evisu Gallery. Following from the success of this, another Cube Gallery was opened in Hong Kong to critical acclaim showcasing some 48 local artists.

Continuing the Evisu Cube Gallery tradition of supporting the arts, Evisu will exhibit in with local artists contributing to the project, with the pieces being auctioned at the end. Proceeds of the art piece sales will be donated to the children’s charity Care For Children. The exhibition opening will be held on 9th November at the Evisu Xintiandi Specialty Store in .

We hope to see you there!

Daruma’s at Savile Row, London

daruma window

The art of Zen has been around a little longer than the art of tailoring, but both aim to uphold a tradition rich in culture. For this reason, the doll is prominently featured in the window of Evisu’s Saville Road store in London.

doll comes from the depiction of Bodhidharma, who was the father and founder of Zen, and symbolizes optimism and determination. Having the dolls in the window not only brings hope for the future but adds a bit of character to the street known for it’s fine tailoring.

In Japanese, men’s suiting is known as sebiro, pronounced “sey-b-row,” which is a japonification of the famous street’s name. Evisu is known for it’s quality denim, but before Hideheko Yamane became the denim maniac he is now, he was first and foremost a tailor.

Come and visit us and see the window and the AW07 Daruma influenced collection at 9 Savile Row, London.

We also enjoy the idea of combining two companies that care about the quality of their products so deeply, and aren’t afraid to take the time to make original pieces. Like how Yamane collected all of the machinery necessary to make , the folks at Grand 1888 did the same to make a genuine Dutch . In the “old days” the bicycles were made with gold mudguard plackets, but due to the expense of the craftsmanship it’s rarely done anymore. Not only does this have the gold mudguards, but the seat is custom made for Evisu by one of the oldest independent Dutch saddle makers and the extra firm spokes are perfectly sized to hub which reduces the risk of breakage.
