A man with a last name but a man that doesn’t need it. Say the name Kanye and automatically images of a man with style and eloquence pops in your head. Ever-known for his inventive fashion sense and good tase, Kanye upholds his roots but knows no shame when it comes to indulging in the finer threads life has to offer. So when Kanye stopped by the Evisu showroom, it was only a matter of minutes before we were talking about denim and Evisu’s latest collection. Classic, as always.

In the photo he is wearing our red puffer vest. Look for it online at our North American or International online stores.

The international fashion pack gathered in the magnificent Palazzo Visconti to see Evisu’s AW08 edgy and wearable collection, inspired by the theme ‘Fighting for Japan’. The collection is the most exciting and dramatic to date consisting of Evisu’ trademark collections; Deluxe, Heritage and Mainline each taking on their own interpretation of the theme.
Evisu Deluxe is inspired by the Wartime Prints by Mr. Kiyochika Kobayashi of 1894-95, as seen in a double breasted coat made by the official fabric that was used in the war in the late 1800’s. Along with suits, coats, ties and silk cotton shirts, Deluxe introduces the ‘Finest Jeans Ever Made’. Each pair is individually sewn from start to finish by one machinist using only a single-needle sewing machine and then personally signed on the label.
Heritage looks to its proud ancestry of the Samurai Warriors who ferociously defended Japan from its enemies. The jeans, t-shirts and sweaters took on true vintage letterman appliqués giving the Japanese theme a sporting twist.
Mainline was inspired by the theme of “One night in Tokyo” and is based on the underground and dark side of the city. Shirts and t-shirts are embroidered and printed with bullet holes, the Evisu smiley face and two faces godhead tee. These are combined with vintage jeans for the perfect Tokyo look.

The Japanese New Year is a very different experience when compared to the rest of the world. Instead of drunken debauchery, fireworks, champagne, and revelry, the Japanese spend this time quietly with their family eating special new years food with soba buckwheat noodles and a sticky rice cake called mochi. There is also special new years shows on TV which has traditionally focused around the Red and White song festival that battles the year’s most popular singers against each other, but more recently televised fighting has become popular with a mix of boxing, martial arts, kick-boxing, and wrestling featuring professional fighters (sometimes matched against sumo wrestlers!!), as well as public figures in the spotlight.
At Evisu, we like to spend time with our family in front of the TV flicking between the surreal acts of violence and cheesy Japanese pop stars while eating soba noodles and drinking beer and sake. At midnight we sometimes head down to the local temple which is packed with people praying and bringing in the new year. At this time of the years temples have lots of food and carnival like booths near the entrance which add a fun and festive atmosphere.
We also like to send New Years cards. 2008 is the year of the mouse or rat, and so all the cards this year feature a little rodent. The cards usually have a message like Shinnen Akemashite Omedetou-gozaimasu, which literally means “Happiness to you on the dawn of a new year“. Here are few of the cards we really loved this year from the SADA 104 Japanese greeting postcard exhibition

From everyone at Evisu we wish you a Happy New Year! Akemashite Omedetou!

Have you been naughty or nice this year? The little elves at Evisu have been busy in the Japanese North Pole (Hokkaido) making authentic vintage selvedge jeans for all the boys and girls for Christmas. Leave out some Japanese Sake, and if you have been nice Yamane in a Santa denim suit might climb down your chimney and give you a little indigo present.
For those that have been naughty, Santa Yamane might not visit you, but you could always come to our London Savile Row store and enjoy the christmas window.

Have you ever wondered what a month is like in the life of a denim maniac? Chicken (pictured above) was the first member of the Dirty Dozen + 1 project which sees 13 people consecutively wearing the same pair of jeans everyday for one month each before passing it to the next member. The jeans are already well travelled and have made it to ball games, amusement parks, to the seaside, and central park in a just a few weeks. Denim maniacs know that the only way to wear raw selvedge denim is to wear it often and never wash it so that the denim develops natural wear and incredibly unique features like a patina, whiskers, and honeycombs. When the Dirty Dozen + 1 jeans are finished in late 2008 they would have had 13 continuous months of everyday wear!
After being with Chicken in New York for a month, the jeans were handed to Almondcrush in New Jersey who continues to carry the torch on this denim odyssey. Eventually the DD+1 jeans will make their way around to world to far off locales such as Germany, England, Singapore, and even to the jeans home in Japan.
