The art of Zen has been around a little longer than the art of bespoke tailoring, but both aim to uphold a tradition rich in culture. For this reason, the Daruma doll is prominently featured in the window of Evisu’s Saville Road store in London.
Daruma doll comes from the depiction of Bodhidharma, who was the father and founder of Zen, and symbolizes optimism and determination. Having the Daruma dolls in the window not only brings hope for the future but adds a bit of character to the street known for it’s fine tailoring.
In Japanese, men’s suiting is known as sebiro, pronounced “sey-b-row,” which is a japonification of the famous street’s name. Evisu is known for it’s quality denim, but before Hideheko Yamane became the denim maniac he is now, he was first and foremost a tailor.
Come and visit us and see the Daruma window and the AW07 Daruma influenced collection at 9 Savile Row, London.
